Mooiste AR ervaring:
Malheur Raid XL 2007. Toen racete ik voornamelijk samen met Esther en waren we in de veronderstelling dat 2 vrouwen het nooit op zouden kunnen nemen tegen de mannen. Dat was tot bovengenoemde wedstrijd. Door regen en kou waren de omstandigheden in de Belgische Ardennen verre van ideaal. Teams vielen uit, geblesseerd of onderkoeld. Esther en ik hadden nergens weet van en finishten na 36 uur zomaar als 2e overall. Dat was het begin van een mooie tijd waarin wij de mannen het vuur aan de schenen legden… 😉
Slechtste of opmerkelijkste AR ervaring:
In veel wedstrijden staat veiligheid bovenaan de prioriteitenlijst. Zo af en toe wordt je verrast als dat niet het geval is of als veiligheid anders wordt gedefinieerd. Zo kwamen Patrick en ik in 2013 bij de Island Explorer op Bornholm bij stevige in het donker bij een coasteering etappe voor de keuze te staan: in het donker, zonder verdere begeleiding in het water springen en een paar kilometer door de golven langs rotswanden naar het volgende CP zwemmen, of de veiligere route via het land pakken en kilometers teruglopen. De enige ingebouwde veiligheid was een mannetje met een lamp op het punt waar we uit het water moesten komen…
We kozen voor het eerste. Het ging goed en was super leuk om de doen. Maar stel je voor als het niet goed was gegaan..

Waarom AR:
De combinatie van zoveel lichamelijke en mentale aspecten waarbij je elke keer weer iets nieuws ervaart en waarbij de wereld de wereld zich net van haar mooiere, ruwere en intensere kant laat zien.

Favorite race or most beautiful AR experience:
Malheur Raid Xl 2007. At that time I was racing with Esther, my female teammate. We were assuming that two women racing could never get close to the men dominating the sport. That assumption diminished after above race. Rain and low temperatures in the Belgian Ardennes made this race far from easy. Teams dropped out, one after one, due to injuries or hypothermia. Esther and I weren’t aware of any of that and kept going as we always did. Which meant that we finished 2nd after 36 hours of racing. Bizarre.
It was the beginning of an era where we were ‘one of the guys’. 🙂
Worst or remarkable AR experience:
In many races safety is first priority. But sometimes you find a race where that is not the case, or where the definition of safety is a bit different from what we are used to. In 2013 Patrick and I were racing the Island Explorer on Bornholm. During a coasteering stage at night we came to point where we had to chose betweens swimming in the dark alond cliffs without any support in quite high waves for a few kilometers to the next CP, or take the safe route and turn around for a detour by foot of several kilometers. The only safety was a guy with a (headlight) at the point where we had to exit the water.
We chose the first. It was great. But imagine what it would have been like if it wouldn’t have been without problems..
